How to Make Christmas Wreath Sugar Cookies
This really is a very simple Christmas sugar cookie recipe and a good one for beginner bakers. Make a batch of these, a tray of white chocolate fudge, and a batch of Nutella cookies to take to a holiday cookie exchange. Ingredients
Here’s what you’ll need for this recipe. Gather your ingredients before you begin baking.
For the Sugar Cookies:
- 1/2 cup or 1 stick of unsalted butter butter (softened at room temperature, plus 2 tablespoons melted)
- 1/3 cup granulated sugar
- 1¼ cups all-purpose flour
- 1 large egg
- ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
Directions
Although these cookies look a little different from the Little Debbie Christmas Wreath cookies you might remember from childhood, I think they taste better. So, I consider them a premium copycat recipe!
In fact, they’re pretty sophisticated, with a melt-in-your-mouth texture. Serve these on a plate with an assortment of White Chocolate Chip and Cranberry Cookies, Apple Cider Shortbread, and Grandma’s Molasses Cookies for a Christmas Eve treat. And here’s how to make them.
- Preheat the Oven: Set your oven to 400°F (200°C).
- Mix Butter and Sugar: In a mixing bowl, beat the softened butter and granulated sugar with a stand mixer for 1-2 minutes until creamy. Melt the additional 2 tablespoons of butter in the microwave and add it to the mixture.
- Add Egg and Vanilla: Incorporate the egg and vanilla extract into the mixture, whipping until smooth.
- Combine Dry Ingredients: Add the salt and baking powder. Gradually mix in the flour, ¼ cup at a time, until completely combined.
- Chill the Dough: Form the dough into a ball, wrap it in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for 90 minutes.
- Prepare for Rolling: Remove the dough from the refrigerator and cut it in half. Sprinkle flour onto your baking surface.
- Roll and Cut the Dough: Roll out the dough to ¼-inch thickness. Use a round cookie cutter or glass to cut out circles. Then, use a smaller cutter or glass to cut out the center, creating a wreath shape.
- Bake the Cookies: Place the cookies on a baking mat or parchment-lined baking sheet. Bake for 8-10 minutes or until the edges are slightly brown for a crispier cookie. Bake less for a softer cookie.
- Cool: Allow the cookies to cool completely before frosting.
Christmas Wreath Cookies Frosting
This is my plain frosting recipe. If you prefer, split it into portions and use a few drops of red or green food coloring.
Ingredients
- 1 stick unsalted butter (room temperature)
- 2 cups confectioner’s sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2 tablespoons unsweetened vanilla almond milk
Directions
- Beat the Butter: Using a stand mixer, beat the room-temperature butter until smooth.
- Add Sugar Gradually: Slowly add the confectioner’s sugar, ½ cup at a time, mixing well after each addition.
- Mix in Vanilla and Milk: Add the vanilla extract and almond milk, continuing to beat until the frosting is creamy and spreadable.
Decorating Christmas Wreath Cookies
Now that your cookies and frosting are ready, it’s time for the fun part—decorating! You might like to use mini red and green M&M candies, little red hot cinnamon candies, red, green or chocolate sprinkles, or even finely diced maraschino cherry pieces. They look very pretty on white icing.
Steps to Decorate:
- Color the Frosting: Divide the frosting and add green food coloring to most of it for the wreaths, leaving a small amount of white or red for accents.
- Frost the Cookies: Spread or pipe the green frosting onto each cookie, covering it evenly.
- Add Details: Use candies or sprinkles to mimic holly berries on the wreath.
- Create a Bow: Pipe a small bow at the bottom of each wreath using the contrasting frosting color.
Get creative and have fun decorating these wreath sugar cookies. Remember to let the kids add their own personal touches with different sprinkles or edible glitter. Another fun idea? Use mini marshmallows or coconut flakes for a snowy effect.

FAQs
Do you have questions about this Christmas Wreath Cookies recipe? I have answers to some of the most commonly asked questions.
How long can I store these Christmas Wreath Cookies?
You can store the cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week. If you want them to last longer, consider freezing them without the frosting and decorating them when ready to serve.
Can I use a different type of milk in the frosting?
Yes, you can substitute the unsweetened vanilla almond milk with regular dairy milk or another non-dairy alternative like soy or oat milk.
What if I don’t have a cookie cutter?
No problem! You can use a glass to cut out the larger circle and a smaller glass or bottle cap to cut out the center. Creativity is part of the fun.
