Apple Oatmeal Cookies FAQs

Here are some common questions about making apple oatmeal cookies.

Can I use any variety of apples?

You can indeed. However, keep in mind that the firmer varieties such as Granny Smith, Cortland, Pippin and Crispins are better for baking. They hold their shape well. Other varieties, such as McIntosh apples, become mushy and have a higher water content. This can result in mushy cookies.

Are these breakfast cookies?

While we make these for snacks and desserts, it would be easy to adjust them for a hearty breakfast cookie. Add raisins, craisins, flax seeds or other dried fruit instead of the sugar glaze. You could also sub in 1/2 cup of grated carrot instead of the grated apple to make carrot breakfast cookies.

Can I freeze these cookies?

Yes! They freeze well. I usually freeze them without the glaze and add that after thawing. Sometimes I will crisp them up in the oven first.
